Mineral Exploration and Consultancy Limited (MECL), a public sector undertaking under the Ministry of Mines, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Provincial Government of Catamarca, Argentina. The agreement aims to deepen collaboration in exploration and resource development of critical minerals, particularly lithium.
The discussions highlighted ongoing lithium exploration initiatives by Khanij Bidesh India Ltd. (KABIL) and Greenko in Catamarca, along with prospects for increased participation of Indian companies in Argentina’s mining projects. Both sides explored avenues for investment, long-term supply agreements, and joint ventures, reinforcing India’s commitment to securing a stable supply of critical minerals.
Senior officials from both countries engaged in dialogues on policy frameworks, regulatory aspects, and sustainable mining practices to ensure a mutually beneficial partnership. The discussions also emphasized knowledge exchange and infrastructure support to enhance India’s engagement in Argentina’s mining sector.
The signing of this MoU marks a strategic milestone, reaffirming India and Argentina’s commitment to expanding cooperation in the critical minerals domain. This collaboration is expected to accelerate lithium exploration projects, enhance resource security, and create new opportunities for Indian enterprises in Latin America’s mining landscape.
Union Minister for Coal and Mines, G. Kishan Reddy, along with the Secretary, Ministry of Mines, and senior officials, held discussions in New Delhi with H.E. Raúl Alejandro Jalil, Governor of Catamarca, Argentina. The talks focused on expanding cooperation in the mining sector, particularly in lithium exploration and investment opportunities, further strengthening the growing partnership between the two nations.
