An estimated 54% of the world’s population lives in an urban area and this is expected to grow in the coming years. Rural unemployment pushes migrants to urban areas where they expect to get excellent employment opportunities and easy access to health, education, and other basic needs. In the light of the increasing urban population, massive restructuring of cities is required. The infrastructure and assets must be wisely used to ensure operational efficiencies and create new revenue streams for the governments as well as their citizens.

A smart city is undoubtedly an intelligent town transforming living and working environment. It aims to improve the quality of life for residents and visitors. The key role is to optimize its operations and promote economic growth by using advanced technologies and analyzing specific data. The government authorities initiate the better management of assets and resources in the growing urban environment.

Designing a city smart is paramount to a rich and enhanced urban environment that drives economic growth and promises a high quality of life to its residents.  Thus, local government authorities are agile to launch initiatives for designing a smart city. ICT is used to develop and promote sustainable development practices and address the rapidly growing urbanization challenges.
