Ministry of Defence Inks Contract with Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders for Advanced Coast Guard Vessels

To bolster maritime security and reinforcing the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ (Self-Reliant India) initiative, the Ministry of Defence has inked a contract with Mumbai-based Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd (MDL) on January 24, 2024, for the acquisition of 14 Fast Patrol Vessels (FPVs) for the Indian Coast Guard (ICG). The contract, valued at Rs 1070.47 crores, is a major stride in enhancing India’s indigenous shipbuilding capabilities.

These multi-role FPVs, designed, developed, and manufactured indigenously by MDL under the Buy (Indian-IDDM) Category, are slated to be delivered within a total timeframe of 63 months. The vessels are set to feature advanced technology and equipment, including multipurpose drones, wirelessly controlled remote water rescue craft lifebuoy, and artificial intelligence capabilities, providing the ICG with increased flexibility and operational advantages in addressing contemporary multidimensional challenges.

The FPVs are anticipated to play a critical role in various maritime operations, such as fisheries protection and monitoring, control and surveillance, anti-smuggling operations, search and rescue operations (including in shallow waters), assistance to distressed ships/crafts, towing capabilities, and monitoring during marine pollution response operations and anti-piracy efforts.

The acquisition aligns with the government’s heightened focus on maritime security, enhancing the ICG’s capabilities to meet evolving threats. The move is expected to significantly contribute to the protection and management of India’s vast coastal areas.

The project is set to stimulate maritime economic activities, boost indigenous shipbuilding, and promote growth in ancillary industries, particularly in the MSME sector. The initiative is also poised to generate employment opportunities and foster expertise development in the country.
