Vice Admiral CR Praveen Nair assumed command as the new Commandant of the Indian Naval Academy (INA) on 29 August 2024. He succeeds Vice Admiral Vineet McCarty, marking a significant leadership transition at one of India’s premier military training institutions.
A specialist in Surface Warfare, with further expertise in Communications and Electronic Warfare, he brings with him an illustrious career spanning over three decades. His academic credentials are equally impressive, having graduated from the Defence Services Staff College in Wellington and the US Naval War College in Newport, USA. He also holds an M.Phil. in Defence and Strategic Studies from Mumbai University.
Throughout his career, Vice Admiral Nair has held several critical positions in the Indian Navy. He served as the Signal Communication Officer aboard various ships and later as the Fleet Electronic Warfare Officer and Fleet Communications Officer of the Western Fleet. His experience extends to his role as the Fleet Operations Officer of the Eastern Fleet from 2018 to 2019.
In his command appointments, Vice Admiral Nair has led the missile corvette INS Kirch, commissioned the Guided Missile Destroyer INS Chennai, and commanded the Indian Navy’s largest warship, the Aircraft Carrier INS Vikramaditya. His shore-based appointments include serving as Directing Staff at the Naval War College in Goa, Officer-in-Charge of the Signal School, and Commodore (Personnel) at the Directorate of Personnel, Naval Headquarters. Additionally, he has been an active member of the Indian Naval Strategic and Operational Council (INSOC), contributing to strategic planning and operational decisions.
Promoted to Rear Admiral in January 2022, Vice Admiral Nair took on the role of Assistant Chief of the Naval Staff (Policy and Plans) at Naval Headquarters. Before his current appointment as Commandant of the INA, he was the commanding officer of the Indian Navy’s Western Fleet, overseeing crucial maritime operations.
