Indian Railways, DFCCIL Sign MoU to Enhance Train Safety with AI/ML Based Inspection System

In a move aimed at enhancing the safety and operational efficiency of its train services, Indian Railways has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Limited (DFCCIL) to deploy Machine Vision Based Inspection System (MVIS) for real-time monitoring of rolling stock.

Machine Vision Based Inspection System is an AI and machine learning-enabled system that uses high-resolution cameras installed on the wayside to capture images of the under-gear of moving trains. The system automatically detects any loose, hanging, or missing components and raises real-time alerts, enabling swift preventive action.

As part of the agreement, DFCCIL will take charge of procuring, supplying, installing, testing, and commissioning four MVIS units. This marks the first deployment of such a system by Indian Railways and represents a significant shift toward automation in maintenance practices.

Officials said the initiative is expected to substantially reduce the need for manual inspections, prevent potential service disruptions, and improve the overall safety of train operations.

The deployment of MVIS is part of Indian Railways’ broader strategy to integrate intelligent and digital solutions into its infrastructure, furthering the goal of building a modern, future-ready rail network.

The MoU was formally signed at Rail Bhawan, New Delhi, by Sumit Kumar, Director (Project & Development), Railway Board, and Jawahar Lal, GGM (Mechanical), DFCCIL. The event was attended by B. M. Agrawal, Member (Traction & Rolling Stock), Praveen Kumar, Managing Director, DFCCIL, and senior officials from both Indian Railways and DFCCIL.
