New Delhi: The University Grants Commission (UGC), on Wednesday, declared 20 universities across India as “fraudulent,” indicating that these institutions are not authorized to grant any degrees to students. Notably, the city with the highest number of these universities is Delhi, which has a total of eight such institutions.
The move made by the UGC aims to safeguard students from falling into the trap of pursuing education from unaccredited and fraudulent institutions. It is imperative for students and their parents to thoroughly verify the accreditation status of universities before enrolling, ensuring a professional, engaging, and informative approach to their education choices.
‘It has come to the notice of the UGC that a few institutions are offering degrees in contrary to the provisions of the UGC Act. Degrees awarded by such universities shall neither be recognized nor valid for higher education or employment purposes. These universities are not empowered to confer any degree,’ stated, UGC secretary Manish Joshi read. List of fake universities released by the University Grants Commission:

Last year, the UGC released a list containing 21 universities flagged as “fake.” Some of these universities have once again appeared on this year’s list. As per the UGC, only universities established under a Central, State/Provincial Act, or recognized as deemed-to-be universities, are authorized to confer degrees.
Educational institutions that are specifically authorized by an Act of Parliament also possess the privilege to confer degrees to their students. This ensures that these institutions, which have the necessary legal support and authorization, can maintain high academic standards and provide legitimate qualifications to their students.
