The Konkan Railway Corporation on Tuesday announced that it has successfully completed the electrification of its entire 741 km route between Roha in Maharashtra and Thokur in Karnataka. The foundation stone for the electrification on this route was laid in November 2015. The electrification on the route will be very beneficial in saving fuel expenditure which was around Rs 150 crore. Operation on electric traction will promote reduced pollution and reduce dependence on HSD oil.
Konkan Railway is one of the largest railway routes on the Indian Railway network; hence the implementation of the train operations with electric traction on the newly electrified KR route will be done in different phases.
Ashwini Vaishnaw, Minister for Railways, Communications, Electronics & Information Technology, Government of India had shared the news on his Twitter handle saying, “100% electrification of Konkan Railway completed today.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi took it to Twitter for this big achievement and said, “Congratulations to the entire Konkan Railway Team for the remarkable success of Mission 100 percent electrification and setting new benchmarks of sustainable development.”
