Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, announced major infrastructure and IT sector initiatives at the Advantage Assam 2.0 Investment and Infrastructure Summit, reinforcing the government’s commitment to industrial growth in the North East.
Describing the region as the “New Engine” of India’s development, Vaishnaw unveiled plans for a new semiconductor plant in Assam, positioning the state as a key player in India’s electronics and semiconductor manufacturing sector. Additionally, he announced that Guwahati Railway Station will be transformed into a new IT hub, further strengthening digital infrastructure in the region.
Expansion of Railway Infrastructure
The Minister highlighted significant railway infrastructure development, stating that 1,824 km of new railway tracks have been constructed in Assam and the North East since 2014. He also announced the commissioning of two Gati Shakti cargo terminals at Moinarband and Cinnamara, with six additional terminals planned at Chaygaon, New Bongaigaon, Bihara, Hilara, Baihata, and Rangjuli, aimed at enhancing the region’s freight network.
Enhanced Rail Connectivity
Strengthening rail connectivity, Vaishnaw confirmed the operation of one Vande Bharat Express in the Northeast, with another soon to connect Guwahati and Agartala. Two Amrit Bharat trains—linking Guwahati with Delhi and Chennai—are also set to become operational this year. Additionally, he announced the establishment of a railway engine midlife remanufacturing facility in Lumding and a Wagon Workshop at Bashbari in the Bodoland area with an investment of Rs 300 crore.
Strengthening Regional and International Connectivity
Further expanding regional trade and transportation, Vaishnaw emphasized improved connectivity between Assam and Bhutan, unlocking new economic opportunities. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment under the Bodo Agreement by announcing key infrastructure projects for the Bodoland region, including the Wagon Workshop in Bashbari.
The initiatives unveiled at the summit underscore the government’s strategic focus on infrastructure, digital transformation, and regional economic growth, positioning Assam and the North East as emerging industrial and technological powerhouses.
