Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah will inaugurate a two-day national conference on ‘Extradition of Fugitives: Challenges and Strategies’ in New Delhi on Thursday, organised by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
The conference will bring together senior officers from central and state police organisations to deliberate on strengthening international cooperation in tracing and bringing back fugitives wanted in India. Officials from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), and other key stakeholders will also participate.
The two-day discussions will focus on:
-
Enhancing collaboration through formal and informal channels for international cooperation.
-
Leveraging technology to track fugitive criminals.
-
Developing strategic and legal frameworks for efficient extradition.
-
Studying the financial footprints of wanted offenders.
Special sessions will address challenges linked to narcotics, terrorism, cybercrime, organised crime, and economic offences.
Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India has intensified efforts to strengthen cross-border coordination in criminal investigations. In July 2025, Amit Shah had emphasised the need for a coordinated and time-bound approach to expedite the return of fugitives through legal and diplomatic channels.
Currently, over 300 extradition requests from India are pending across various foreign jurisdictions, often delayed by fugitives exploiting legal loopholes abroad. Many of these offenders are linked to organised criminal syndicates and continue to operate from overseas.
Earlier, Shah had launched the BHARATPOL portal, developed by the CBI, which integrates district and state police units with central agencies to enable real-time information sharing.
The CBI expects that insights and strategies emerging from this conference will help refine India’s approach to extradition, strengthen inter-agency coordination, and accelerate efforts to bring fugitive criminals to justice.
