The Assam government has officially appointed Dr. Ravi Kota, a seasoned bureaucrat with a distinguished career, as the Chief Secretary to the Government of Assam. The announcement was made by the state’s personnel department through an official order on Tuesday.
Dr. Kota, a 1993 batch officer of the Assam-Meghalaya cadre, is set to assume office upon the superannuation of the current Chief Secretary, IAS Paban Kumar Borthakur, on March 31.
Having previously served as the Additional Chief Secretary for the Home & Political Department, which included overseeing Passport and Prisons, Dr. Ravi Kota will now take charge as the Additional Chief Secretary of the Industries, Commerce & Public Enterprises Department. Additionally, he will hold an additional responsibility as the head of the Finance Department. Dr. Kota will also serve as the Officer on Special Duty (OSD) in the Office of the Chief Secretary, Assam.
Known for his extensive leadership experience in public finance, fiscal practices, and macroeconomic policies, Dr. Kota holds a Ph.D. in Agronomy and is a gold medalist. His career, spanning over three decades, includes notable roles such as Joint Secretary of the 15th Finance Commission in the Ministry of Finance, Government of India, and Principal Secretary, Finance, in Assam.
Notably, Dr. Ravi Kota has represented the Government of India as the head of the economic wing at the Indian Embassy in Washington, D.C. During his tenure, he focused on fostering India-US economic relations, addressing monetary issues, and facilitating investments. Dr. Kota also played a pivotal role in handling matters related to international financial institutions such as the World Bank and IMF. Additionally, he contributed significantly to the US-India Clean Energy and Climate Partnership 2030.
