The Indian Army has partnered with Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) to commence demonstration trials of Hydrogen Fuel Cell Bus technology. This collaboration was formalized with the signing of MoU in the presence of General Manoj Pande, Chief of the Army Staff (COAS), and Shrikant Madhav Vaidya, Chairman of Indian Oil.
During the event, the Indian Army received its first Hydrogen Fuel Cell Bus, marking the beginning of a mutually beneficial partnership aimed at fostering innovation and advancing sustainable transport solutions. The MoU underscores both parties’ commitment to environmental stewardship and innovation.
Hydrogen Fuel Cell technology represents a clean and efficient alternative to conventional fuels by converting hydrogen gas into electricity through an electro-chemical process, with water vapor as the only byproduct. This ensures zero emissions, making it a highly eco-friendly transportation solution.
The newly introduced Hydrogen Fuel Cell Bus boasts a seating capacity of 37 passengers and offers an impressive mileage of 250-300 kilometers on a full 30 kg onboard tank of hydrogen fuel. This development is expected to significantly reduce the carbon footprint of military transport operations.
This initiative follows the Indian Army’s earlier commitment to green energy solutions. On March 21, 2023, the Army became the first government entity to sign an MoU with National Thermal Power Corporation Renewable Energy Limited for the installation of Green Hydrogen-based Microgrid Power Plants along the Northern Borders. A pilot project is underway at Chushul, where a 200 Kilo Watt Green Hydrogen-based Microgrid will provide 24×7 clean electricity to troops deployed in extreme climatic conditions.
With a clear focus on innovation and environmental responsibility, the Hydrogen Fuel Cell Bus initiative between the Indian Army and IOCL marks a significant step towards cleaner and greener transport solutions. This partnership not only showcases the Army’s commitment to sustainable practices but also sets a precedent for other institutions to follow.
