In a recent revelation, an IBM report has highlighted that 59% of Indian enterprises have actively deployed AI, positioning India at the forefront of AI adoption among surveyed countries. The ‘IBM Global AI Adoption Index 2023’ reveals that nearly three-quarters (74%) of these Indian enterprises have ramped up their AI investments in the past 24 months, particularly in research and development (R&D) and workforce reskilling.
Key Drivers and Challenges
The report underscores several key drivers behind this rapid adoption. The accessibility of AI tools, the necessity to reduce costs, automate processes, and the increasing integration of AI into off-the-shelf business applications are primary factors propelling AI adoption in India.
However, the report also identifies significant barriers to wider AI adoption. The need for more employees with the requisite skills, ethical concerns, and the complexity of AI projects are prominent challenges. Addressing these barriers will be crucial in the coming years, emphasizing the need for robust AI governance frameworks and comprehensive upskilling initiatives.
Emphasis on Trust and Governance
A significant 94% of Indian businesses emphasize the importance of explaining AI decisions, indicating a strong focus on building trust in AI systems. Despite this emphasis, only a minority are taking concrete steps towards trustworthy AI, such as reducing bias, tracking data provenance, and developing ethical AI policies. Sandip Patel, Managing Director of IBM India & South Asia, highlights the critical need for data and AI governance tools to build trust and confidently adopt AI.
“Without governance tools, AI can expose companies to data privacy issues, legal complications, and ethical dilemmas – cases we have already seen plaguing many worldwide,” Patel remarked.
Impact on Workforce
AI is playing a pivotal role in addressing labor and skill shortages by automating manual tasks, customer service, and recruitment processes. Furthermore, 46% of enterprises are actively training or reskilling employees to use AI tools, with 51% of employees expressing enthusiasm for adopting AI and automation tools.
India’s leading position in AI adoption, with 59% of enterprises integrating AI into their operations, reflects the country’s strong commitment to leveraging technology for business growth. While significant progress has been made, addressing skill shortages and ethical concerns through robust governance frameworks and upskilling initiatives will be vital to fully harness AI’s potential.
The ‘IBM Global AI Adoption Index 2023’ paints a promising picture of AI’s future in India, with businesses poised to reap substantial benefits from their AI investments while navigating the challenges of this transformative technology.
