1992-batch IAS officer of the Bihar cadre, Dr. Arunish Chawla has taken charge as the Secretary of the Department of Revenue in the Ministry of Finance, marking a significant appointment in the Indian government. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet appointed Dr. Chawla as the Secretary of the Department of Revenue on Wednesday, and he has already taken charge of his new role.
Previously, he served as the Secretary in the Department of Pharmaceuticals in the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilisers since November 1, 2023.
Dr. Chawla’s impressive career spans various critical roles, including his tenure as the Managing Director of the Metro Rail Project Patna, where he oversaw the development of the city’s metro rail system. He has also had the opportunity to work on foreign assignments, including his stint as the Senior Economist at the International Monetary Fund and as the Minister (Economic) at the Embassy of India in Washington DC. Additionally, he has served as the Joint Secretary in the Department of Expenditure, Ministry of Finance, where he played a key role in shaping the country’s fiscal policies.
What’s more, Dr. Chawla is an accomplished academic, holding a Master’s and Doctorate in Economics from the prestigious London School of Economics. This strong educational foundation has equipped him with a deep understanding of economic frameworks and policy-making, making him an ideal candidate to lead the Department of Revenue.
