MoD Inks ₹2,960 Crore Contract with Bharat Dynamics Limited for MRSAM Systems for Indian Navy

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) signed a contract with Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) for the supply of Medium-Range Surface-to-Air Missiles (MRSAM) for the Indian Navy. The agreement, valued at approximately ₹2,960 crore, was formalized in the presence of Defence Secretary Shri Rajesh Kumar Singh at a ceremony held in New Delhi.

The MRSAM system is a critical addition to the Indian Navy’s defence arsenal, already a standard fit onboard multiple naval ships. This system will also be integrated into the majority of future naval platforms under development, underscoring its pivotal role in strengthening India’s maritime security.

Aligned with the government’s flagship initiative, Aatmanirbhar Bharat, the MRSAM systems will be manufactured by BDL under the ‘Buy (Indian)’ procurement category, incorporating a substantial percentage of indigenous content. This initiative not only advances self-reliance in defence production but also fosters innovation within India’s defence industry.

The contract is expected to create approximately 3.5 lakh mandays of employment, benefiting various stakeholders, including Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) involved in the defence supply chain.

Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh highlighted the agreement’s importance, stating, ‘This contract represents a landmark step in achieving our vision of a self-reliant defence ecosystem. It reaffirms our commitment to indigenising cutting-edge technology and strengthening the Indian Navy’s operational capabilities.’

The MRSAM system is equipped to counter a wide range of aerial threats, ensuring robust defence for naval platforms and enhancing India’s maritime operational readiness. This partnership between MoD and BDL further solidifies India’s position as a hub for advanced defence manufacturing.
