Bharti Airtel, a leading telecom major, has announced its pioneering role as the first network operator to offer connectivity for India’s underwater metro, set to debut in Kolkata. This innovative metro service, hailed as an engineering marvel, is poised to connect Howrah to Kolkata and is on the verge of opening its doors to the public.
Anticipating the commercial launch of this underwater marvel, Airtel has made substantial investments in the requisite infrastructure. As a result, the company is slated to become the foremost operator to provide connectivity across the 4.8km expanse of Kolkata’s East-West Metro corridor, seamlessly linking Howrah Maidan with the Esplanade.
Airtel’s ambitious plans for the underwater metro entail the deployment of high-capacity nodes an impressive 35 meters below the surface of the Hooghly River. Moreover, the company has meticulously laid fiber optics along the entire 4.8 km stretch, connecting crucial stations such as Howrah Maidan, Howrah Station, Mahakaran, and Esplanade.
At each of these stations, high-capacity nodes have been strategically placed to ensure uninterrupted connectivity. Commuters can look forward to experiencing lightning-fast 5G speeds, crystal-clear voice calls, and seamless data transmission. These enhancements are poised to revolutionize the daily commute, empowering passengers to stay connected and productive throughout their journeys.
Ayan Sarkar, CEO of Bharti Airtel West Bengal and Odisha, expressed the company’s commitment to pushing boundaries for customer service. Sarkar stated, ‘Airtel is committed to pushing boundaries to better serve its customers. This initiative to provide under-river tunnel connectivity will certainly make a difference to commuters where they will get access to High-Definition video streaming, gaming, multiple chatting, instant uploading of photos and more, along with enjoying the scenic stretch below river Ganga.’
As India eagerly awaits the inauguration of its first underwater metro, Airtel’s pioneering efforts promise a new era of connectivity and convenience for commuters in Kolkata.
