The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has announced new guidelines for FASTag users, effective from August 1, 2024. These rules aim to streamline toll payment processes and reduce congestion at toll booths across the country.
Under the new rules, the replacement of FASTags and the Know Your Customer (KYC) process have been prioritized. The key updates include:
Replacement of 5-Year-Old FASTags: All FASTags older than five years must be replaced on a best-effort basis.
KYC Update for 3-Year-Old FASTags: Users must update the KYC for FASTags issued three years ago.
Linking Vehicle Details: It is now mandatory to link the vehicle registration number and chassis number with the FASTag.
New Vehicle Registration Update: The registration number must be updated within 90 days of purchasing a new vehicle.
Database Verification: FASTag providers are required to verify their databases to ensure accuracy and compliance.
Photo Upload Requirement: Users must upload clear photos of the car’s front and side.
Mobile Number Linking: Each FASTag must be linked to a mobile number.
These measures are part of NPCI’s efforts to enhance the efficiency of toll collections and ensure smooth passage through toll plazas.
In addition, Paytm has introduced a new feature on its app, allowing users to recharge their FASTags directly through the platform. This development follows the Reserve Bank of India’s restrictions on Paytm Payments Bank Limited (PPBL) due to regulatory concerns. Despite these challenges, Paytm assures users that all other services on the app, including UPI transactions, QR code payments, Soundbox, and Card Machine payments, continue to operate seamlessly.
With the new feature, Paytm users can now recharge their FASTags conveniently, reducing the need to wait in long queues or face delays at toll plazas. This move aims to provide enhanced convenience to users amidst the ongoing regulatory scrutiny faced by PPBL.
