Aizawl Smart City is actively contributing to the cleanliness and sustainability of the city by focusing on effective waste management. A crucial step in this direction is the construction of a state-of-the-art Material Recovery Facility (MRF), being developed in collaboration with Nepra Resource Management Pvt. Ltd., Ahmedabad, Gujarat. This facility, which is set to be one of the most advanced in the country, is already under construction in the western part of Aizawl. Once operational, it will process all solid waste generated under the Aizawl Municipal Corporation. The facility is expected to significantly enhance waste segregation, recycling, and overall cleanliness across the city.

There have been numerous complaints in Aizawl city regarding the improper processing of municipal solid waste. One of the key reasons for this issue has been the absence of a proper Material Recovery Facility (MRF). The establishment of such a facility is a significant step forward in addressing this challenge. Once operational, dry waste from across the city will be systematically processed at the MRF located in the eastern part of Aizawl. This initiative not only marks a major improvement in the city’s waste management infrastructure but also represents a valuable contribution toward the goals of Viksit Bharat 2047.

Are there any prominent projects you are currently working on?

Another major project currently underway is what we simply refer to as the City Centre—a large commercial complex designed to accommodate 1,103 stalls, thereby creating employment opportunities for over 1,000 individuals. Due to the scale and impact of this project, Aizawl Smart City received the Smart City Best Infrastructure Award at the Smart City Conclave held in Delhi in 2024, even though the project is still under construction. As of now, around 50–60% of the work is completed, and according to our current timeline, we expect to complete the project by December 2026. It is one of the biggest infrastructure projects we are currently managing under the Smart City initiative.

Can you tell us about the sports infrastructure initiatives under Aizawl Smart City?

As a part of our contribution to Viksit Bharat 2047, we are also focusing on sports infrastructure development. We aim to nurture world-class athletes, in line with the vision of our Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi.

A key milestone in this direction is the recent completion of a state-of-the-art Badminton Hall, considered one of the best in the Northeast region. The facility features six professional courts and has already garnered attention, with a renowned Indian badminton player visiting the Mizoram Badminton Centre.

We are also running a dedicated training center at this facility, where young Mizo athletes are being trained. Our aspiration is that at least one of these athletes will go on to represent India in the 2036 Olympics.
