Board Exams To Be Held Twice A Year From 2024

New Delhi: The Ministry of Education has introduced a novel curriculum framework that marks a significant shift towards a more inclusive and accessible education system. Aligned with the New Education Policy (NEP), this upcoming framework brings about revolutionary changes encompassing a wide range of aspects, from board examinations to language studies.

Under the new transformative curriculum, there will be a significant change in the traditional annual board exams. These board examinations will now be held twice a year, allowing students to aim for their highest scores. This strategic decision aims to alleviate the high-pressure environment that is often associated with single annual exams, as stated in the Ministry of Education’s new curriculum framework.

The Minister of Education, Dharmendra Pradhan, on Wednesday, announced that the new curriculum framework (NCF), in accordance with the National Education Policy 2020, has been finalized. Textbooks for the academic year 2024 will be developed based on this framework.

Major updates to be noted:

  • The New Education Policy (NEP) mandates that students should learn two languages, one of which should be an Indian language.
  • The new framework promotes the assessment of students’ understanding and competency rather than relying on extensive coaching and memorization. This student-centered approach aims to enable learners to develop a deeper comprehension of subjects and practical skills.
  • Board examinations will be conducted twice a year to ensure that students are provided with ample time and opportunities to showcase their performance.
  • Students have the opportunity to take a board exam in subjects they have completed and feel prepared for. Furthermore, they are permitted to retain their highest score, according to the statement.
  • The flexibility to choose subjects is being expanded, as the curriculum framework envisions a future where students can explore a wide range of disciplines beyond the traditional Arts, Science, and Commerce streams. This allows for a more well-rounded learning experience.
  • Additionally, students will now have the opportunity to appear for board exams in subjects of their choosing, allowing them to showcase their preparedness and retain the best score achieved.
  • “In due course, school boards are expected to develop the capability to offer ‘on-demand’ exams. It is stated that board exam test developers and evaluators will be required to complete university-certified courses before undertaking this task.”
  • The framework’s emphasis on optimizing educational resources is clearly demonstrated through its encouragement to refrain from simply “covering” textbooks in the classroom.
  • Furthermore, the Ministry highlights the importance of optimizing textbook expenses, ensuring that high-quality education remains accessible to all.
