The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), the National Standards Body under the Government of India, has announced 500 internship opportunities for students from its Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) partner institutions. The announcement was made during the Annual Convention of BIS Standardisation Chairs and Nodal Faculty, held recently.
The internships are open to students pursuing four-year degree programmes, five-year integrated degree courses, postgraduate degrees, and diploma programmes. The eight-week internship will provide hands-on experience in pre-standardisation work across two major industries. It will also include Quality Control Order (QCO) compliance surveys in coordination with BIS field offices and site visits to large-scale industries, MSMEs, and testing laboratories.
As part of the internship, students will conduct in-depth studies on aspects such as raw materials, manufacturing and testing processes, in-process quality controls, and conformity assessment.
Highlighting the impact of the BIS-Academia interface, BIS noted several key achievements:
- Standardisation modules have been integrated into the curriculum of 15 institutions.
- Over 130 research and development projects have been initiated.
- More than 50 institutions have established BIS Corners and Academic Dashboards.
- A total of 198 Standards Clubs have been formed in 52 institutes.
- Over 3,400 students from 74 institutions have participated in national-level quizzes.
- 500 student internships are scheduled for the 2025–26 academic session.
In his inaugural address, BIS Director General Pramod Kumar Tiwari emphasised the shared national mission to instil a culture of quality and standardisation in academia. Deputy Director General (Standardisation), Shri Rajeev Sharma, urged institutions to foster action-oriented partnerships and contribute actively to the country’s quality framework.
The convention featured technical sessions on curriculum integration, formulation of standards, and student engagement through Standards Clubs and promotional activities. An open house discussion allowed institutions to share best practices and innovative academic collaboration models.
Representatives from 58 partner institutions attended the event. Five institutions—IIT Roorkee, SSEC Chennai, NIT Jalandhar, SVCE Chennai, and PSNACET Dindigul—were felicitated for their outstanding contribution to BIS initiatives under the MoU.
