Empowering Students: Integration of Vocational Education into Mainstream Curriculum

In a significant move towards aligning education with industry needs, the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 has recommended the integration of vocational education into mainstream education across all educational institutions. As part of this initiative, the vocational education component of the Samagra Shiksha scheme is actively promoting National Skills Qualifications Framework (NSQF) compliant vocational courses for students from class 9th to 12th in eligible schools.

At the Secondary level (Class 9 and 10), students can now opt for vocational modules as an additional subject, while at the Senior Secondary level (Class 11 and 12), vocational courses are offered as a compulsory (elective) subject. This provides students with a diverse range of 88 Job Roles in 22 Sectors, allowing States/UTs to align their offerings with the specific skill gaps identified through Skill Gap Analysis.

The vocational education component under Samagra Shiksha aims to enhance the employability and entrepreneurial abilities of students. It offers exposure to the work environment, generating awareness about various career options, and enabling students to make informed choices in accordance with their aptitude, competence, and aspirations.

To support the implementation of vocational courses, states and union territories are assisted in developing state-of-the-art vocational and skill labs in schools and District Institutes of Education and Training (DIETs). Additionally, employability skills, including communication skills, self-management skills, information and communication technology skills, entrepreneurship skills, and green skills, have been made mandatory parts of the vocational courses, ensuring a comprehensive skill set for the students.

The National Curriculum Framework for School Education, developed in pursuance of the NEP 2020, lays down clear objectives for approaches to vocational education. The framework aims to develop vocational capacities, knowledge, and relevant values for all students, providing them with the option to join the workforce after school if they choose to do so.

The Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (MSDE) is playing a crucial role in coordinating skill development efforts across the country. In collaboration with MSDE, the Department of School Education and Literacy is actively implementing Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana 4.0 (PMKVY 4.0) in the school education sector. This initiative further strengthens the commitment to equipping students with the skills necessary for a dynamic and evolving job market.

The integration of vocational education into mainstream curriculum not only prepares students for the workforce but also nurtures a generation of individuals capable of contributing significantly to the nation’s economic growth.
