Government Launches Helicopter Emergency Medical Service and Expands Air Connectivity in Uttarakhand

Enhancing emergency medical services and air connectivity in Uttarakhand, India’s Civil Aviation Minister, Jyotiraditya M Scindia, announced the imminent launch of the state’s first Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS) and the expansion of air routes connecting Hindon Air Base to Pithoragarh.

The HEMS initiative, operating under the ‘Sanjeevani’ project, is poised to revolutionize emergency response in the region. Stationed at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Rishikesh, the service will leverage helicopters to airlift accident victims within a 150-kilometer radius to the medical facility. Minister Scindia affirmed the progress of helicopter assembly and certification, emphasizing the government’s steadfast commitment to its deployment.

Furthermore, responding to Uttarakhand’s request for improved air connectivity, Minister Scindia disclosed the completion of the bidding process for air routes between Hindon Air Base and Pithoragarh. These routes, to be awarded under the Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik (UDAN) scheme following meticulous investigation, signify a significant leap towards bridging transportation gaps in the region.

During discussions with Uttarakhand’s CM Pushkar Singh Dhami, Minister Scindia reaffirmed the government’s dedication to advancing infrastructure projects in the state. Notably, assurances were made regarding the construction of a new integrated airport building, underscoring the administration’s holistic approach towards uplifting Uttarakhand’s aviation sector.

The implementation of these initiatives is expected to be transformative for Uttarakhand, particularly considering its challenging topography. Once operational, the HEMS and expanded air connectivity will not only enhance access to medical services during emergencies but also facilitate smoother transportation across the region, crucial during natural disasters or exigencies.
