Government To Launch Bharat New Car Assessment Programme

New Delhi: The Bharat New Car Assessment Programme (Bharat NCAP) will finally be launched on 22nd August 2023 by Nitin Gadkari, the Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways. This long-awaited program is a significant stride towards the Government’s dedication to enhancing road safety in India.

By raising the safety standards of motor vehicles weighing up to 3.5 tonnes, this initiative aims to make our roads safer for everyone.

The programme’s primary objective is to offer car customers a valuable tool for evaluating the crash safety of motor vehicles available in the market. Within the framework of this initiative, car manufacturers have the option to voluntarily offer their vehicles for testing in accordance with the Automotive Industry Standard (AIS) 197.

Based on the performance of the vehicle during the tests, it will receive star ratings for Adult Occupants (AOP) and Child Occupants (COP). Potential car customers can use these star ratings to compare the safety standards of different vehicles and make their purchasing decisions accordingly.

It is anticipated that there will be an increase in the demand for cars that prioritize safety, which in turn will prompt car manufacturers to align themselves with customer requirements. By adhering to rigorous safety standards, the Indian automotive industry will gain a competitive edge in the global market, consequently boosting the potential for car exports from India. This program aims to foster the growth of a safety-conscious car market in India.
