IHMCL Introduces GIS-Based Software for Real-Time Monitoring of Toll Plazas to Enhance Traffic Flow

In a move to streamline traffic at toll plazas across the country, the Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL), promoted by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), has developed a GIS-based software for real-time monitoring of waiting times at toll plazas. This innovative solution is initially being implemented at around 100 toll plazas, which were selected based on congestion feedback received via the 1033 National Highway helpline.

The new software will provide vital data such as the name and location of the toll plaza, live updates on queue length in meters, total waiting time, and vehicle speed. It will also issue congestion alerts and suggest lane distribution adjustments when the vehicle queue exceeds the prescribed limit, ensuring smoother traffic flow.

Mapped to NHAI field offices nationwide, the software offers NHAI officials valuable insights through comparative traffic condition analysis on an hourly, daily, weekly, and monthly basis. This data will be crucial for managing traffic queues and congestion effectively.

Additionally, the software provides updates on current weather conditions and information about local festivals, enabling NHAI to take pre-emptive measures to manage traffic load and decongest toll plazas. This live monitoring and tracking system aims to ensure a hassle-free tolling experience and a seamless traffic flow for National Highway users across the country
