The Government of India has invited proposals for establishing Centres of Excellence (CoE) dedicated to advancing Green Hydrogen research and development under the R&D Scheme of the National Green Hydrogen Mission. This call for proposals (CfP), issued by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) on November 4, 2024, aims to create world-class CoEs in India focused on innovation and sustainable energy solutions, ultimately enhancing the nation’s energy independence.
The CoEs are envisioned as hubs for cutting-edge research, skill development, and knowledge sharing in Green Hydrogen technologies, including production, storage, and utilization. They will also serve as focal points for collaboration among stakeholders such as industry leaders, academia, and government bodies, driving advancements that contribute to a low-carbon economy and sustainable development. These centers will leverage collective expertise and resources to develop and deploy more efficient processes and innovative products across the Green Hydrogen sector.
MNRE had earlier issued comprehensive guidelines on March 15, 2024, for implementing the R&D Scheme. The CoEs will be supported by a government allocation of Rs 100 crore, fostering public-private partnerships that include research institutions and universities to ensure a well-rounded approach to innovation.
The National Green Hydrogen Mission, launched on January 4, 2023, with an outlay of Rs 19,744 crore extending to FY 2029-30, aims to make India self-reliant through clean energy. This mission is anticipated to drive significant decarbonization, reduce fossil fuel dependency, and position India as a global leader in Green Hydrogen technology.
