India to Launch its First International Space Station by 2028, Announces ISRO Chairman

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is set to achieve another milestone by launching India’s first international space station (ISS) by 2028. The announcement was made by ISRO Chairman S Somnath during an event in Ahmedabad on Friday.

During the gathering of young scientists at the Bhartiya Vigyan Sammelan, a collaborative initiative of Vigyan Bharti (Vibha) and the Gujarat government, Chairman Somnath revealed that the first module of the international space station is scheduled for launch in the next five years.

‘The first module of the international space station will weigh 8 tonnes and will be equipped with robotic capabilities,’ announced Chairman Somnath. This marks a significant step forward for India’s space exploration endeavors, demonstrating the nation’s prowess in developing advanced space technologies.

Chairman Somnath expressed confidence in India’s ability to establish its presence in space, stating, ‘India will have its own ‘Bharat Space Station’ during Amrit Kal.’ The announcement reflects India’s commitment to furthering its capabilities in space research and exploration, placing the nation on the global map for cutting-edge advancements in space technology.

The 2028 launch will be a robotic module, a satellite, where we can dock, conduct experiments and come back. A human being going (to the space station) can happen only after 2035. This is the plan as of today,’ he was quoted as saying.

The upcoming international space station is expected to serve as a platform for various scientific experiments, collaborations with international space agencies, and advancements in space technology.

The decision to launch India’s own international space station aligns with the country’s long-term vision for space exploration and scientific research. The project is anticipated to open new avenues for international collaboration and position India as a key player in the global space community.

ISRO encourages young scientists and researchers to actively participate in and contribute to this ambitious space mission, fostering innovation and scientific excellence within the nation.
