With an aim to boost the country’s rail network, Ashwini Vaishnaw, the Union Minister of Railways, Communications, and Electronic & Information Technology, unveiled ‘The Indian Railways Construction Manual, 2023’ in New Delhi.
Addressing the audience at the launch, Minister Vaishnaw emphasized the manual’s pivotal role in streamlining various activities such as land acquisition, forest clearance, bridge design, contract management, tunnel construction, and road flyover/under bridges. He expressed confidence that this comprehensive guide would contribute to making the Indian Railways the world’s fastest-growing rail network.
Highlighting the manual’s contemporary relevance, Vaishnaw underscored the significant reforms incorporated, including updated methodologies like EPC contracts, standardized bridge construction, and execution of signaling, electrical, and non-interlocking works. He credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s focus on railway development and acknowledged the outdated nature of the previous manual from around 1960.
The Union Minister commended the efforts of Roop Narayan Sunkar, former Member (Infrastructure), Railway Board, and the entire team responsible for crafting the manual. The Indian Railway Institute of Civil Engineering and construction officers from different zonal railways collaborated to prepare this crucial document.
This manual marks a milestone in Indian Railways’ commitment to providing construction officials with the necessary knowledge for expediting projects. Aligned with the National Rail Plan, the manual supports the goal of developing railway capacity by 2030 to meet demand up to 2050. With a focus on critical projects, new lines, gauge conversion, multi-tracking, automatic signaling, and traffic facility works, the manual aims to guide construction officials efficiently.
The manual, presented in simple language for easy comprehension by field officials, reflects a concerted effort to propel Indian Railways into a new era of infrastructure development, aligning with the nation’s growing needs.
