The Ministry of Coal in India has set ambitious targets for coal production, aiming to achieve 186.63 million tonnes exclusively from captive and commercial coal mines during the fiscal year 2024-25. This production goal is set to further escalate to 225.69 million tonnes in FY 2025-26, with a long-term plan projecting an impressive 383.56 million tonnes by FY 2029-30.
The latest data, as of December 31, 2023, reveals that 50 captive and commercial coal mines are currently under production. Out of these, 32 mines have been allocated to the power sector, 11 to the non-regulated sector, and seven mines specifically designated for coal sales. Notably, within three and a half years of the commencement of the Commercial Coal Mines Auction in 2020, six mines with a cumulative peak rated capacity (PRC) of 14.87 million tonnes have already commenced production.
In December 2023 alone, the total coal production from captive and commercial coal mines reached an impressive 14.04 million tonnes, marking a substantial 38% increase from the 10.14 million tonnes recorded in the same month the previous year.
The period from April 1 to December 31, 2023, witnessed remarkable growth in coal production and dispatch from captive and commercial coal blocks. The cumulative coal production from these sources during this period stood at a staggering 98 million tonnes.
These developments underscore the government’s commitment to boosting domestic coal production to meet the nation’s energy demands. The increased production aligns with India’s broader energy strategy, addressing the needs of both the power sector and non-regulated industries. The Ministry’s plans not only reflect a rapid pace of implementation but also highlight the success of the Commercial Coal Mines Auction in attracting investment and expediting the production process.
As the nation forges ahead with its ambitious targets, the coal sector’s performance will likely play a pivotal role in shaping India’s energy landscape and supporting its growing economy in the years to come.
