Justice Sheel Nagu Appointed as Chief Justice of Punjab & Haryana High Court

The Centre has officially notified the appointment of Justice Sheel Nagu as the Chief Justice of the Punjab & Haryana High Court. Prior to this appointment, Justice Nagu was serving as the Acting Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court, following the demission of Chief Justice Ravi Malimath on May 24, 2024.

In an official notification, the Centre stated, ‘The President is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Sheel Nagu, Judge of the High Court of Madhya Pradesh, to be the Chief Justice of the High Court of Punjab and Haryana with effect from the date he assumes charge of his office.’

Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva has now been appointed as the new Acting Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court.

Justice Nagu’s name was recommended by the Supreme Court Collegium on December 28, 2023. The Collegium, comprising Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and Justices Sanjiv Khanna and BR Gavai, made the recommendation following the retirement of Chief Justice Ravi Shankar Jha on October 13, 2023.

This marks the second judicial appointment cleared by the Centre in as many days. The pending recommendations, which have lingered for over six months, saw movement with the recent appointment of Justice BR Sarangi as the Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court on July 3, 2024.
