Maharashtra is set to become a pioneer in artificial intelligence (AI) education and research with the establishment of the country’s first AI university. The state government has formed a dedicated task force to oversee the planning and implementation of this landmark initiative, announced Maharashtra’s Information Technology Minister, Ashish Shelar.
The AI University will serve as a centre of excellence, fostering research, innovation, and skill development in AI and related technologies. It will encourage collaboration between industry leaders, academia, and government bodies, ensuring a robust ecosystem for technological advancement.
‘The establishment of an AI university aligns with our commitment to leveraging technology for development, as highlighted in the BJP’s election manifesto. This institution will not only focus on AI research and education but also on skill development, technological innovation, and policy formulation to position Maharashtra as a hub for AI-driven progress,’ said Minister Shelar.
To ensure the successful execution of the project, a high-level task force has been constituted, chaired by the Principal Secretary of the Information Technology Department. The task force comprises experts from various domains, including:
- Directors of IIT Mumbai and IIM Mumbai
- Representatives from leading global and national corporations such as Google India, Mahindra Group, and L&T
- Officials from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, Government of India
This team of experts will work on structuring the university’s curriculum, research facilities, and industry partnerships to make it a globally recognized institution in AI and emerging technologies.
The AI University will emphasize interdisciplinary learning, offering programs that integrate AI with fields such as healthcare, finance, manufacturing, and governance. Additionally, it will provide specialized training and certification courses to equip students and professionals with future-ready skills.
Maharashtra’s initiative to establish an AI university is expected to boost the state’s position as a leader in technological innovation and attract global investments in AI research and development. The university will play a crucial role in shaping the future of AI in India and contributing to the nation’s digital transformation journey.
