Ministry of Heavy Industries Signs Programme Agreement with Reliance for 10 GWh ACC Manufacturing

The Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI), Government of India, has signed a Programme Agreement with Reliance New Energy Battery Limited, a subsidiary of Reliance Industries Limited, for a 10 GWh Advanced Chemistry Cell (ACC) manufacturing capacity under the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme. The agreement, finalized after a competitive global tender process, positions Reliance New Energy Battery Limited as a key beneficiary under the ₹18,100 crore PLI ACC scheme.

The signing marks a significant milestone in the implementation of the technology-agnostic PLI Scheme under the “National Programme on Advanced Chemistry Cell (ACC) Battery Storage,” which was approved by the Union Cabinet in May 2021. The scheme aims to achieve a total manufacturing capacity of 50 GWh, with this latest award bringing the cumulative allocated capacity to 40 GWh.

The first round of bidding, conducted in March 2022, resulted in three firms being granted a total of 30 GWh capacity, with agreements signed in July 2022. This second round sees Reliance New Energy Battery Limited joining the roster of selected firms, contributing further to India’s vision of becoming a global hub for advanced battery manufacturing.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, senior MHI officials underscored the scheme’s role in fostering local value addition while ensuring competitive manufacturing costs on a global scale. The PLI ACC Scheme offers beneficiary firms the flexibility to choose the most suitable technologies and inputs to establish cutting-edge ACC manufacturing units, thereby bolstering the electric vehicle (EV) and renewable energy storage sectors.

The initiative is expected to significantly reduce India’s dependence on imports for battery storage solutions, support the growth of indigenous manufacturing capabilities, and align with the country’s broader objectives of promoting clean energy and sustainable development.
