Union Minister of Coal and Mines, Shri G. Kishan Reddy, chaired a meeting of the Parliamentary Consultative Committee of the Ministry of Coal at the Parliament Annexe, New Delhi. The meeting focused on the theme of “Sustainability and Green Initiatives” undertaken by the coal sector. Minister of State for Coal and Mines, Shri Satish Chandra Dubey, along with senior officials and members of the Parliamentary Committee, actively participated in the discussions.
Coal Sector’s Role in Sustainability
In his opening remarks, Shri G. Kishan Reddy emphasized the coal sector’s vital contribution to India’s energy security and economic growth while ensuring environmental sustainability. He highlighted that PSUs in the coal and lignite sectors are balancing coal production with environmental conservation, societal welfare, and biodiversity protection.
He reiterated the government’s commitment to achieving the Net Zero emissions target by 2070 and assured that coal PSUs are exceeding statutory environmental norms to maintain high environmental standards in mining regions.
Key Highlights of Green Initiatives
A detailed presentation by the Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Coal showcased the wide-ranging sustainability efforts by Coal and Lignite PSUs, which include:
- Afforestation and Bio-reclamation: Reclamation of mined land through extensive tree plantations.
- Green Credit Program: Participation in initiatives to offset carbon emissions.
- Eco-parks and Mine Tourism: Development of eco-friendly recreational spaces.
- Renewable Energy Projects: Focus on solar and wind energy installations.
- Community Initiatives: Utilization of mine water for agricultural and domestic purposes.
- Energy Efficiency and Dust Suppression: Implementation of measures to improve air quality and reduce energy consumption.
- First Mile Connectivity Projects: Infrastructure development to improve coal transportation and reduce environmental impact.
Appreciation and Suggestions
Committee members, including Shri Surendra Prasad Yadav, Thiru Arun Nehru, and Smt. Himadri Singh, praised the Ministry’s proactive steps toward environmental sustainability and community welfare. They suggested adopting best practices to further benefit local communities and emphasized the importance of replicating successful models across the sector.
Vision for a Sustainable Future
Shri Satish Chandra Dubey underscored the coal sector’s environmentally sustainable practices as a testament to the Ministry’s dedication to climate goals and societal well-being. Coal Secretary Shri Vikram Dev Dutt highlighted how these efforts align with India’s Mission LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment).

He assured that their suggestions would be implemented to ensure that the coal sector remains a key driver of economic growth while contributing to a green and sustainable future for India.
The meeting saw active participation from Parliamentary Committee members, including Shri Bidyut Baran Mahato, Dr. Rajesh Mishra, and Shri Ganesh Singh, among others. Senior officials from the Ministry of Coal, CMDs of Coal India Limited (CIL), NLC India Limited (NLCIL), and CIL subsidiaries were also present.
