New Delhi: The Prime Minister’s Development Initiative for the North Eastern Region (PM-DevINE) was recently introduced as a new scheme in the Union Budget 2022-23. This Central Sector scheme, fully funded by the Central government, includes an initial list of seven projects and an allocation of Rs.1500 crore. On 12 October 2022, the Cabinet approved the PM-DevINE scheme, which has a total outlay of Rs.6,600 crore for the four-year period from 2022-23 to 2025-26, aligning with the remaining years of the 15th Finance Commission period.
The PM-DevINE scheme aims to achieve several objectives. Firstly, it aims to provide infrastructure funding in alignment with the PM GatiShakti initiative. Additionally, it aims to support social development projects based on the identified needs of the North Eastern Region (NER). Moreover, the scheme aims to enable livelihood activities for the region’s youth and women, while addressing development gaps across various sectors. In accordance with these objectives, a total of eleven projects, amounting to Rs.1503.44 crore, including the initial seven projects announced in the Budget 2022-23, have been selected for sanction in the financial year 2022-23. So far, an amount of Rs.121.10 crore has already been disbursed. For easy reference, a state-wise and project-wise list of projects approved during the financial year 2022-23 is available.
The time frame set for PM-DevINE scheme projects is as follows: projects are expected to be sanctioned by 2023-24, and completion is targeted by 2025-26.
