PM Inaugurates New Integrated Terminal Building of Veer Savarkar International Airport, Port Blair

New Delhi: The new integrated terminal building of Veer Savarkar International Airport in Port Blair was inaugurated today by Prime Minister Narendra Modi through video conferencing. The construction cost of the terminal building is approximately Rs 710 crores, and it has the capacity to handle around 50 lakh passengers annually.

During his address to the gathering, the Prime Minister mentioned that although the program was taking place in Port Blair, the entire nation was eagerly looking towards the Union Territory as the demand for increased passenger handling capacity at Veer Savarkar International Airport was being fulfilled. He also expressed his desire to be present on the occasion to witness the joyful atmosphere and happy faces of the citizens. Additionally, he noted that the airport’s capacity expansion was a response to the demand from those who wished to visit Andaman.

Previously, the existing terminal could handle 4000 tourists, but with the new terminal, this number has increased to 11,000. Furthermore, the airport can now accommodate 10 planes at any given time. The Prime Minister highlighted that the new terminal building in Port Blair would enhance ease of travel, ease of doing business, and connectivity in the region.

The development of facilities has given a boost to tourism, which has seen a significant rise in footfall compared to 2014. Factors such as mobile connectivity, health infrastructure, airport facilities, and improved roads have contributed to this growth. Adventure tourism is also flourishing, and its popularity is expected to increase substantially in the coming years.

Concluding, the Prime Minister emphasized the need for all of us to dedicate ourselves to the development of the country. He drew attention to the remarkable progress made by islands and small coastal countries worldwide. Despite the challenges along the path of progress, he expressed confidence that development initiatives in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands would further strengthen the entire region.
