In a recent development aimed at bolstering all-weather connectivity and military agility along the China frontier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the much-anticipated Sela Tunnel on Saturday. This infrastructure marvel, constructed by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) at an altitude exceeding 13,000 feet, is being hailed as a game-changer for the region’s accessibility and defence preparedness.
The Sela Tunnel, comprising two bi-lane tunnels with lengths of 1,595 meters and 1,003 meters, alongside 8.6 kilometers of approach and link roads, marks a monumental achievement for India’s infrastructure capabilities. Costing Rs 825 crore, this project stands as the world’s longest bi-lane tunnel, with robust safety measures in place.
Equipped with state-of-the-art ventilation systems, lighting, and fire fighting mechanisms, the tunnel can accommodate daily passage for 3,000 cars and 2,000 trucks, ensuring both civilian and military traffic flow smoothly. Its construction signifies a significant upgrade from the perilous single-lane route that hindered heavy vehicle access to the strategically crucial Tawang area.
Addressing the challenges faced during winters, when the Balipara-Chariduar-Tawang (BCT) road often experiences blockages at the Sela pass due to heavy snowfall, the tunnel provides a reliable, all-weather link to Tawang. This not only saves commuters nearly 90 minutes in travel time between Tawang and Dirang but also eliminates the logistical hurdles faced by the military in troop deployment.
Moreover, the Sela Tunnel’s strategic significance cannot be overstated. Serving as an essential link between Assam’s 4 Corps headquarters and Tawang, it facilitates rapid deployment of troops and heavy weaponry, enhancing India’s defense readiness. The tunnel’s construction also mitigates the tactical disadvantage posed by the visible Sela pass, which was observable to Chinese soldiers from the Line of Actual Control (LAC).
Described as an engineering marvel, the Sela Tunnel employs the latest Austrian tunnelling method and integrates top-notch safety features. Officials have emphasized that besides strengthening defence capabilities, the tunnel will also contribute to the socio-economic development of the border region, opening new avenues for growth and progress.
