Sanjay Kumar Jain, an esteemed Indian Railway Traffic Services (IRTS) Officer of the 1990 batch, has taken over the reins as the Chairman & Managing Director of the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation Ltd (IRCTC).
With a wealth of experience spanning over three decades, Jain’s distinguished career showcases a blend of leadership roles in policy-making, commercial ventures and developmental initiatives within the Government of India and Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs). A qualified Chartered Accountant (CA), he has held pivotal positions across various ministries and departments, including the Ministry of Railways, Department of Public Enterprises, and the Ministry of Finance.
Notable among his leadership roles are his tenure as Principal Chief Commercial Manager at Northern Railway, Group General Manager (North Zone) at IRCTC, and Divisional Railway Manager at Mumbai Central Railway. Under his guidance, IRCTC’s North Zone witnessed a remarkable growth of 35 times in its tourism business over a span of five years. His innovative marketing strategies breathed new life into the luxury train Maharajas’ Express and led to the establishment of India’s first ‘Executive Lounge’ at New Delhi Railway Station.
During his tenure as Divisional Railway Manager in Mumbai, Mr. Jain spearheaded numerous initiatives aimed at enhancing passenger amenities and environmental sustainability. His efforts in promoting cleanliness and heritage conservation were recognized with prestigious awards, including the “Best Iconic Swachhata Place Award” for Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus and UNESCO’s Asia Pacific Cultural Heritage Award for the conservation of Mumbai Byculla Railway Station.
His commitment towards women empowerment is exemplified by the establishment of the first all-women-run railway station at Matunga, Mumbai, which found its place in The Limca Book of Records. Additionally, his initiatives such as the “Muck Special” train for garbage collection along railway lines underscore his dedication to community welfare and environmental stewardship.
Recognized for his meritorious services, he has been honored twice with the Minister of Railways award, reflecting his exemplary contributions to the Indian Railways.
