New Delhi: The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) released a consultation paper titled “Encouraging Innovative Technologies, Services, Use Cases, and Business Models through Regulatory Sandbox in Digital Communication Sector” on Thursday.
The paper proposes a draft sandbox framework for live testing of new digital communication products or services in a regulated environment. TRAI seeks feedback from stakeholders on various aspects of the framework.
Written comments on the draft framework will be accepted until July 17, and counter comments until August 1, 2023. The Authority aims to promote creativity and accelerate the adoption of advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), and edge computing in the digital communication sector. These technologies are transforming how people connect, interact, and access information, resulting in rapid changes in the sector, TRAI said.
The use of regulatory sandboxes has gained popularity worldwide as a means of promoting innovation in various industries. These sandboxes offer a regulated environment in which companies and innovators can experiment with their concepts, products, and services while operating under flexible regulations.
In the telecommunications industry, the Regulatory Sandbox aims to support the startup ecosystem by providing access to real-time network environments and data, allowing for the testing of new applications’ reliability before their release into the market.
Additionally, the Regulatory Sandbox aims to simplify the clearance process for startups by providing a single window for obtaining all necessary clearances.
To further facilitate testing, cross-sectoral collaboration is encouraged by enlisting the help of other ministries and departments.
The Consultation Paper for seeking inputs from the stakeholders has been placed on TRAI’s website (www.trai.gov.in).
