In a landmark step toward green transportation, Union Minister of Power and Housing & Urban Affairs, Manohar Lal, launched the ‘EV as a Service’ programme by Convergence Energy Services Limited (CESL), a subsidiary of Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL). The launch took place at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium, marking a significant milestone in advancing electric vehicle (EV) adoption across government ministries, departments, Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSEs), and other institutions.
The programme, spearheaded by CESL, aims to deploy 5,000 electric vehicles over the next two years, catering to the rising demand for EVs within the government sector. Utilizing a flexible procurement model, CESL’s initiative enables government offices to select from a variety of E-Car makes and models tailored to their specific operational needs.
Addressing the launch, Union Minister Manohar Lal emphasized the importance of CESL’s role in spearheading clean mobility, stating, ‘The ‘EV as a Service’ programme exemplifies CESL’s dedication to sustainable innovation and showcases its ability to address the urgent need for clean mobility solutions. I commend CESL for driving change and setting an inspiring example in our nation’s journey toward greener transportation. Initiatives like these bring India closer to a future where clean energy is the norm, creating a lasting impact for generations to come.’
CESL has already deployed approximately 2,000 electric cars nationwide and is facilitating the roll-out of around 17,000 electric buses. The ‘EV as a Service’ programme reinforces CESL’s commitment to sustainability and supports India’s ambitious goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2070. Through this initiative, CESL seeks to significantly reduce carbon emissions, cut fossil fuel dependence, and strengthen India’s energy security.
Highlighting CESL’s strategy, Vishal Kapoor, MD & CEO of CESL, said, ‘At CESL, the future of transportation is electric. By facilitating EV adoption in government fleets, we are enabling large-scale emissions reduction and enhancing energy security for India. This programme aligns stakeholders—from manufacturers and fleet operators to policymakers and users—creating a collaborative ecosystem poised for growth. CESL is committed to the vision of an energy-efficient, low-carbon economy, and we are leading the charge by building an infrastructure that will stand as a benchmark for sustainable mobility.’
The launch follows the introduction of the PM E-DRIVE Scheme, a national initiative aimed at accelerating India’s transition to electric mobility. Through programmes like these, CESL is not only enabling the transformation of the country’s transport infrastructure but also reinforcing India’s leadership in sustainable development.
