In a ceremonious event held at the Naval Headquarters today, Vice Admiral Sanjay Bhalla, AVSM, NM, assumed office as the Chief of Personnel (COP) of the Indian Navy. With a distinguished career spanning over 35 years, he has held a number of specialist, staff and operational appointments, both afloat and ashore.
Commissioned into the Indian Navy on January 1st, 1989, Vice Admiral Bhalla has served in a multitude of specialist, staff, and operational positions, both at sea and ashore. Notably, he completed his Specialisation Course in Communication and Electronic Warfare, subsequently serving aboard various frontline warships. His tenure includes commanding prestigious vessels such as INS Nishank, INS Taragiri, and INS Beas, culminating in his appointment as Flag Officer Commanding Eastern Fleet (FOCEF).
During his tenure as FOCEF, Vice Admiral Bhalla played a pivotal role as the Officer in Tactical Command for significant events such as the President’s Fleet Review (PFR – 22) and the Sea Phase of the Indian Navy’s flagship multinational exercise MILAN – 22, showcasing India’s naval prowess on the global stage.
Ashore, he has held critical staff appointments at the Naval Headquarters, including Assistant Chief of Personnel (Human Resource Development), and has overseen officer training at the prestigious Naval Academy. His diplomatic assignment overseas underscores his versatility and strategic acumen.
A distinguished scholar, Vice Admiral Bhalla is an alumnus of prestigious institutions such as the Royal College of Defence Studies, London; Naval War College; Defence Services Staff College, Wellington, among others. His educational credentials include M Phil in Defence & Strategic Studies, Masters in International Security and Strategic Studies from Kings College, London, M.Sc in Defence & Strategic Studies from Madras University, and M.Sc in Telecom from CUSAT.
Vice Admiral Bhalla’s exemplary service has been duly recognized with accolades such as the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, the Nao Sena Medal, and commendations by both the Chief of the Naval Staff and the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief.
