Vice President of India Jagdeep Dhankhar has tendered his resignation from office, effective immediately, citing health concerns and the need to adhere to medical advice. The resignation was submitted to the President in accordance with Article 67(a) of the Constitution.
Dhankhar, who assumed the office of Vice President in 2022, submitted his resignation on Monday. Prior to this, he served as the Governor of West Bengal from 2019 to 2022. His departure marks the end of a tenure during which he also held the constitutional role of Chairman of the Rajya Sabha.
In his resignation letter addressed to President Droupadi Murmu, Dhankhar wrote, “To prioritise health care and abide by medical advice, I hereby resign as the Vice President of India, effective immediately, in accordance with Article 67(a) of the Constitution.”
Expressing deep appreciation for the support extended to him during his tenure, Dhankhar conveyed gratitude to the President, Prime Minister, Council of Ministers, and Members of Parliament.
“I extend my deepest gratitude to Your Excellency—the Hon’ble President of India—for her unwavering support and the soothing, wonderful working relationship we maintained during my tenure,” the letter read.
Dhankhar also acknowledged the guidance and cooperation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Union Cabinet. “The Prime Minister’s cooperation and support have been invaluable, and I have learned much during my time in office,” he said.
He expressed heartfelt appreciation to the Members of Parliament, noting, “The warmth, trust, and affection I have received from all the Hon’ble Members of Parliament would ever be cherished and embedded in my memory.”
Reflecting on his term, the outgoing Vice President described his service as a privilege. “I am deeply thankful for the invaluable experiences and insights I have gained as Vice President in our great democracy. It has been a privilege and satisfaction to witness and partake in India’s remarkable economic progress and unprecedented exponential development during this significant period,” he wrote.
“As I leave the esteemed office, I am filled with pride in Bharat’s global rise and phenomenal achievements and hold unwavering confidence in her brilliant future,” the letter concluded.
