Virgin Galactic Launches Its First Commercial Spaceflight

California: Virgin Galactic, the space tourism company founded by Richard Branson, accomplished a significant milestone on June 29th with the completion of its inaugural commercial spaceflight. The Virgin Spaceship (VSS) Unity spacecraft, carrying the Galactic 01 crew, safely returned to Earth after a successful journey into space.

The Galactic 01 mission utilized the carrier aircraft VMS Eve and the spacecraft VSS Unity as vehicles. The carrier aircraft VMS Eve took off from Spaceport America, New Mexico at 8:30 a.m. MT, carrying the spacecraft VSS Unity to an altitude of approximately 44,500 feet. At this point, Unity was released and activated its rocket motor engine to ascend into suborbital space. Unity touched down on land at 9:42 a.m. MT.

The Galactic 01 crew consisted of four members aboard the VSS Unity spacecraft. The crew included two astronauts from the Italian Air Force, an engineer-astronaut from the National Research Council of Italy, and an astronaut instructor from Virgin Galactic who provided training for the Italian Air Force mission. The spacecraft was piloted by retired American Air Force commander Mike Masucci and former Italian Air Force pilot Nicola Pecile.

The carrier aircraft VMS Eve, responsible for transporting the spacecraft, was piloted by retired American Air Force commander Kelly Latimer and retired Canadian Air Force pilot Jameel Janjua.

In addition to the crew, the VSS Unity carried a total of 13 research payloads. These payloads encompassed a range of research areas, including biomedical studies, thermo food dynamics, and the development of innovative sustainable materials in microgravity conditions.

During the flight, the Italian crew had the opportunity to unfurl their nation's flag while floating inside the spacecraft.

The successful completion of the Galactic 01 mission holds great significance for Virgin Galactic, as the company faces competition from two other prominent US companies, SpaceX led by Elon Musk and Blue Origin led by Jeff Bezos, both of which have already flown private passengers to space.

Virgin Galactic CEO Michael Colglazier expressed his enthusiasm for the successful completion of the Galactic 01 mission, stating that it marks the beginning of a new era in which private passengers and researchers can consistently access space. He emphasized that this historic flight, serving as Virgin Galactic's first commercial flight and dedicated commercial research mission, signifies a new era of reliable and repeatable access to space for private passengers and researchers. The next mission, "Galactic 02," which will involve private astronauts, is scheduled for August, with monthly space missions to follow as Virgin Galactic works towards expanding its spaceship fleet for a global audience.

The safe return of the Galactic 01 mission offers hope for Virgin Galactic to fulfill the aspirations of the hundreds of people on its waitlist, as the company enters the realm of commercial spaceflight services. Virgin Galactic had previously announced the commencement of its commercial spaceflight service on June 15th of this year, with the second commercial spaceflight, Galactic 02, scheduled for early August 2023, and subsequent monthly spaceflights anticipated.

Virgin Galactic's first commercial spaceflight service comes after the successful completion of its final spaceflight test, Unity 25 mission, on May 25th of this year. Prior to the Unity 25 mission, the company's founder Richard Branson and a crew embarked on the Unity 22 mission in July 2021, venturing into space.
