As many as 21 institutions have been identified as fake universities by the University Grants Commission (UGC), while 12 such universities have been shut down since 2014, Minister of State for Education Dr. Sukanta Mazumdar informed in a written reply in the Lok Sabha.
Responding to a question in the Lok Sabha, Dr. Mazumdar confirmed that the UGC has officially declared these 21 institutions as “fake universities” and that action has been taken against them. He emphasized that law and order fall under the jurisdiction of state governments, and accordingly, the central government has urged Chief Secretaries of all states and union territories to initiate legal action for the closure of these fake universities.
The government has also directed state administrations to take strict action against individuals and organizations misrepresenting themselves as universities, awarding invalid degrees, and unlawfully using the term “University” in their names. As a result, 12 such fraudulent institutions have been shut down since 2014.
Additionally, the central government has requested states and union territories to report any other fake universities operating in their respective jurisdictions that are not yet included in the official UGC list.
To create awareness, the government has been issuing public notices through the UGC website and social media platforms, cautioning students, parents, and other stakeholders against enrolling in unrecognized institutions. Legal actions, including FIRs, show-cause notices, and warning letters, have also been taken against unauthorized institutes found guilty of awarding invalid degrees.
The UGC continues to monitor and act against fraudulent institutions to safeguard students and maintain the credibility of higher education in India.
