The Government has announced the selection of 24 companies under the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for White Goods (Air Conditioners and LED Lights) in its third round. The initiative has attracted a committed investment of ₹3,516 crore, further strengthening India’s manufacturing capabilities in these sectors.
In the third round, 38 applications were received, of which 18 new companies have been provisionally selected . These include 10 manufacturers of air conditioner components and 8 manufacturers of LED light components, committing a total investment of ₹2,299 crore. Additionally, 6 existing PLI beneficiaries have been selected to upgrade to higher investment categories, committing an additional ₹1,217 crore.
The selection process is ongoing, with 13 applicants, including two existing beneficiaries, referred to the Committee of Experts (CoE) for further examination. One applicant has chosen to withdraw from the scheme.
Under the PLI Scheme for White Goods, a total of 84 companies have pledged investments worth ₹10,478 crore, which is projected to generate production valued at ₹1,72,663 crore. This significant move is set to bolster India’s position as a manufacturing hub while fostering economic growth.
Components to Be Manufactured
For air conditioners, components such as compressors, copper tubes (plain and/or grooved), control assemblies for indoor and outdoor units, heat exchangers, and BLDC motors will be manufactured. The LED segment will see the production of LED chip packaging, LED drivers, LED engines, LED light management systems, and metallized films for capacitors.
Scheme Overview
The Union Cabinet approved the PLI Scheme for White Goods on April 7, 2021, with a financial outlay of ₹6,238 crore for implementation over FY 2021-22 to FY 2028-29. The scheme, notified by the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) on April 16, 2021, is designed to create a robust component ecosystem for the air conditioner and LED light industries, integrating India into global supply chains.
Incentives and Value Addition
The scheme offers incentives ranging from 6% to 4% on incremental sales over five years, following a one-year gestation period. It also aims to enhance domestic value addition from the current 15-20% to 75-80%, providing a major boost to local manufacturing and employment opportunities.
This initiative aligns with the government’s vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India), promoting innovation, and driving India towards becoming a global manufacturing powerhouse in the white goods sector.
