Assam Government Appoints Gyanendra Pratap Singh as CRPF Director-General

The Assam government has relieved Director General of Police (DGP) Gyanendra Pratap Singh from his post, paving the way for his appointment as the Director-General (DG) of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). Singh, a 1991-batch IPS officer of the Assam-Meghalaya cadre, will serve in his new role until his superannuation on November 30, 2027, or until further orders. His appointment has been approved by the Appointment Committee of the Cabinet.

Singh, who took charge as Assam’s DGP in January 2023 after succeeding Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta, has played a key role in strengthening law enforcement in the state. Before this, he served as Special DGP (Law and Order), contributing significantly to maintaining security and handling critical situations. His transition to the CRPF is expected to further enhance the capabilities of India’s largest paramilitary force.

A notification from the Assam Home Department confirmed that Singh’s services have been placed at the disposal of the CRPF on deputation. The order states that he will assume the new role under the standard terms and conditions of central deputation.

To ensure continuity in Assam’s police leadership, Special DGP Harmeet Singh, a 1992-batch IPS officer, has been appointed as the officiating DGP. He will oversee the department’s operations until a permanent appointment is made.

Singh’s elevation to the CRPF is seen as a significant step, given his extensive experience and leadership in law enforcement. His tenure is expected to contribute to the operational efficiency and strategic deployment of the CRPF across the country.
