Steel demand to sustain double-digit growth: Minister Varma

India’s steel demand is set to maintain double-digit growth in the coming years, driven by government-led infrastructure push, Union Minister Bhupathiraju Srinivasa Varma said at the ISA Steel Conclave 2025. He noted that demand has been rising at a strong pace for the last three years and will continue as the country works towards achieving 300 million tonnes of steelmaking capacity by 2030, compared to current consumption of 150 million tonnes in FY2024-25.

Highlighting the sector’s role in the economy and in India’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat vision, the Minister credited initiatives like the National Infrastructure Pipeline and Make in India for boosting consumption. Varma, who also holds the Heavy Industries portfolio, underscored key priorities for the sector including decarbonisation, advancing the green steel mission, technology adoption, and securing raw material supplies. Market estimates suggest India’s steel demand has been growing at a CAGR of 8–10 percent.
