Amazon, Google Collaborate with White House to Secure Devices from Cyberattack

The White House, in collaboration with major companies such as Amazon, Google, and Best Buy (BBY.N), will unveil an initiative aimed at empowering Americans to identify smart devices that are less susceptible to cyberattacks.

As per a statement released by the White House, this fresh certification and labeling program will establish elevated cybersecurity standards for a range of smart devices, including refrigerators, microwaves, televisions, climate control systems, and fitness trackers.

Manufacturers and retailers will affix a distinctive “U.S. Cyber Trust Mark” logo on their devices, and the program is scheduled to be fully operational by 2024.

An anonymous senior official from the administration highlighted that the objective of this initiative is to enhance the security and utility of networks, recognizing the significance it holds for both national security and the economy.

Before implementing the labeling program, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) will solicit public input and subsequently register a nationwide trademark with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, according to the White House.

Other notable participants in this program include LG Electronics U.S.A., Logitech, Cisco Systems, and Samsung.

In March, the White House introduced its national cyber strategy, placing strong emphasis on the need for software developers and companies to assume greater responsibility in safeguarding their systems against hacking attempts.

Last week, Microsoft and U.S. officials disclosed that state-affiliated hackers from China had quietly breached email accounts in roughly 25 organizations, including at least two U.S. government agencies since May.

Moreover, agencies such as the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Defense have escalated their efforts to combat the actions of hackers and ransomware groups worldwide.
