To boost Goa’s educational landscape, the Centre has allocated Rs 100 crore to the Goa University under the Pradhan Mantri Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan. This substantial grant aims to facilitate the university’s evolution into a multi-disciplinary education and research institution (MERU), heralding a new era of academic excellence and innovation in the state.
The funding infusion underscores the government’s commitment to advancing higher education and research infrastructure in Goa. With a focus on enhancing the state’s gross enrolment ratio in higher education, the grant will primarily support initiatives in distance education, thereby expanding access to quality learning opportunities for students across Goa.
Furthermore, the Goa University plans to leverage the grant to establish bio, health, and IT incubators on its campus, fostering a conducive ecosystem for research and innovation in these critical domains. Additionally, the university intends to introduce programs in new and emerging areas, aligning its curriculum with the evolving demands of the global job market.
Notably, out of the 78 universities that sought funding under the scheme, only 26, including Goa University, were sanctioned the prestigious Rs 100 crore grant, highlighting the institution’s recognized potential for transformative growth. The remaining 52 universities received grants of Rs 20 crore each, further illustrating the significance of this allocation to Goa’s higher education landscape.
Expressing gratitude, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant extended thanks to PM Narendra Modi for the generous grant, emphasizing its pivotal role in bolstering the Goa University’s capacity to offer a diverse range of educational and skill-oriented courses in alignment with the New Education Policy (NEP) of 2020.
