Anil Kumar Khandelwal, a 1987 batch officer, a seasoned veteran with over 35 years of dedicated service to the Indian Railways, has officially taken over the charge as Member Infrastructure, Railway Board & Ex-Officio Secretary to the Government of India in the Ministry of Railways. He assumed this prestigious role on February 20th, 2024, marking yet another milestone in his illustrious career.
Holding a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from MNIT, Jaipur, and an M.Tech from IIT, Roorkee, a 1987 batch officer of the Indian Railway Service of Engineers, he brings a wealth of experience to his new position.
Throughout his remarkable journey, he has been instrumental in the construction and maintenance of vital railway infrastructure across various regions. He began his career amidst challenges in the Naxalite area of South Central Railway as Assistant Engineer/Bellampalli. His journey then led him through Southern Railway, Railway Board, Northern Railway, USBRL Project, and General Manager/East Central Railway.
Noteworthy among his achievements is his role as Chief Administrative Officer/Construction for the prestigious USBRL Project, where he played a pivotal role in the construction of the world’s highest railway bridge, the Chenab Bridge. As Executive Director/Track Machines at the Railway Board, he significantly contributed to India’s transition from a track machine importer to an exporter, emphasizing the ‘Make in India’ initiative.
During his tenure as Executive Director/Non-Fare Revenue, Railway Board, he achieved a remarkable milestone by realizing the highest-ever Non-Fare Revenue of Rs. 10,368 Cr. (6.2% of the total revenue) in 2016-17, showcasing his adeptness in financial management.
Khandelwal’s leadership abilities were further highlighted during his role as the first Principal Executive Director of the Gati Shakti Directorate, Railway Board. Here, he spearheaded initiatives to foster collaboration and streamline project processes, leading to record-breaking performance in project sanctioning and delivery. Under his guidance, Indian Railways commissioned its highest-ever track in the year 2022-23.
His commitment to continuous learning is evident through his participation in strategic management programs at renowned institutions such as INSEAD, Singapore, ICLIF, Malaysia, and the Indian School of Business (ISB), Hyderabad. Additionally, he holds distinguished fellowships and life memberships in several prestigious institutions.
