BhashaNet Portal Launched for Universal Acceptance in Digital Space

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and the National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI) have unveiled the BhashaNet portal, marking a significant step towards fostering digital inclusion and advancing Universal Acceptance across India. The announcement was made during the Universal Acceptance Day event, with support from the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN).

In a bid to bridge the digital language divide, Bhashanet is taking significant strides towards a truly multilingual internet experience for users in India. With a focus on enabling access to local language website names and email IDs, the organization is dedicated to ensuring seamless connectivity for people across diverse backgrounds and regions.

The initiative by Bhashanet comes as a response to the growing need for inclusivity and accessibility in the digital sphere. By promoting the use of local language website names and email IDs, Bhashanet aims to empower users from remote locations and varied socioeconomic backgrounds to navigate the internet with ease.

Key objectives of Bhashanet’s mission include:

  • Encouraging Local Language Usage: Bhashanet is advocating for the adoption of local language website names and email IDs, making it simpler for users to connect online in a language they are comfortable with.
  • Raising Awareness: The organization is actively engaged in promoting awareness of local language URLs and email IDs, emphasizing their importance in fostering a more inclusive internet landscape.
  • Policy Development: Bhashanet is working towards developing policies and regulations that support the integration of local languages into the digital domain, ensuring a conducive environment for multilingual connectivity.
  • Technical Collaboration: Through fostering technical collaborations, Bhashanet seeks to enhance the infrastructure necessary for a seamless transition to a multilingual internet, facilitating smoother user experiences.
  • Engagement with Experts: Bhashanet is actively involving website owners, the web development community, and web security experts in their efforts, recognizing the importance of diverse expertise in achieving their goals.

The theme of the event, ‘BhashaNet: Impetus Towards Universal Acceptance,’ underscored the commitment of MeitY/NIXI to ensure that individuals, regardless of linguistic barriers, can fully participate in the digital world. Secretary of MeitY, S Krishnan, highlighted the necessity of Universal Acceptance for an inclusive internet, particularly for non-English speakers. He emphasized leveraging technology and collaboration to meet the needs of every user, regardless of language or script. Krishnan also spoke of India’s potential to lead in standards for Universal Acceptance conformance.

Government officials and industry leaders gathered to commemorate this milestone, reaffirming India’s commitment to creating a more inclusive digital space. The launch of the BhashaNet portal is poised to enable greater access and participation for diverse linguistic communities in India’s digital landscape.
