In a move aimed at advancing electric vehicle (EV) safety standards, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has unveiled two pioneering regulations: IS 18590: 2024 and IS 18606: 2024. These standards, applicable to EVs in the L, M, and N categories, focus primarily on enhancing the safety of the powertrain—a critical component in ensuring vehicle reliability and user security.
Highlighting the pivotal role of these standards, BIS underscores their rigorous criteria for powertrain safety and stringent requirements for batteries, balancing both performance and security aspects. With electric mobility gaining traction beyond conventional cars and trucks, the standards are poised to set new benchmarks across the burgeoning sectors of E-rickshaws and E-karts.
Recognizing the diverse needs of electric vehicles, BIS has concurrently introduced IS 18294: 2023, tailored specifically for E-rickshaws and E-karts. These regulations encompass comprehensive guidelines covering vehicle construction, operational functionality, and safety protocols, ensuring robust safeguards for drivers and passengers alike.
The introduction of these standards marks a significant stride for BIS, bolstering its repository to encompass a total of 30 dedicated Indian Standards for electric vehicles and associated accessories, including charging systems. This comprehensive framework is pivotal in fostering a sustainable, eco-friendly, and efficient transportation ecosystem nationwide.
These initiatives aim to fostering innovation while prioritizing safety standards in India’s evolving electric vehicle landscape. As the nation navigates towards a greener future, these regulations are poised to play a pivotal role in shaping the next generation of automotive safety and sustainability practices.
