To enhance infrastructure and passenger capacity, the Union Cabinet, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the proposal for the comprehensive development of Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport in Varanasi. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) proposed a transformative plan that includes the construction of a new terminal building, extension of the runway and apron, and other allied works.
Key Highlights of the Development Plan:
- Financial Outlay: The project is estimated to cost Rs. 2869.65 Crore, aimed at expanding the airport’s passenger handling capacity to 9.9 million passengers per annum (MPPA), up from the current 3.9 MPPA.
- New Terminal Building: Spanning 75,000 sqm, the terminal is designed to accommodate 6 MPPA and handle 5000 Peak Hour Passengers (PHP). It will showcase the rich cultural heritage of Varanasi.
- Runway and Apron Expansion: The runway will be extended to 4075m x 45m dimensions, and a new apron will be constructed capable of parking 20 aircraft simultaneously.
- Green Airport Initiative: Varanasi airport will adopt sustainable practices such as energy optimization, waste recycling, carbon footprint reduction, solar energy utilization, and natural daylighting. This initiative aligns with environmental sustainability goals from planning through operational phases.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the strategic importance of upgrading Varanasi airport, stating it would not only bolster connectivity but also enhance tourism and economic opportunities in the region. The development is part of a broader strategy to modernize India’s aviation infrastructure and cater to increasing air travel demands.
The expansion is expected to generate employment opportunities during construction and operational phases, contributing to the local economy. Improved infrastructure will facilitate smoother travel experiences for passengers and support the growth of tourism and commerce in Varanasi and surrounding areas.
